The Board of Education: Governance & Leadership

The Board of Education is a corporate body that serves as the legislative branch of our school district. Composed of elected community members, the Board is responsible for the high-level oversight and strategic direction of our schools, ensuring that our educational system reflects the values and needs of the community.

Purpose of the Board

While the Superintendent manages the day-to-day operations of the schools, the Board focuses on the "Big Picture." Its primary responsibilities include:

  • Policy Development: Creating and maintaining the rules and guidelines that govern district operations.

  • Financial Oversight: Adopting the annual budget, approving expenditures, and ensuring fiscal responsibility.

  • Strategic Planning: Setting long-term goals for student achievement and district growth.

  • Hiring and Evaluation: Selecting and overseeing the Superintendent of Schools.

Note: The Board acts as a collective unit. Individual board members do not have administrative authority over the schools; power is exercised only when the Board meets as a whole.

Understanding Our Regular Meetings

The Board of Education holds regular public meetings to conduct the official business of the district. These meetings are essential for maintaining a transparent relationship between the schools and the public.

Why We Meet

  • Public Accountability: Meetings provide a platform for the Board to vote on contracts, personnel hires, and policy changes in full view of the public.

  • Community Voice: Every regular meeting includes a designated time for public comment, allowing residents to share their perspectives directly with their representatives.

  • Information Sharing: The Board receives reports from district leaders regarding curriculum updates, facilities maintenance, and student performance.

  • Legal Compliance: State law requires that most deliberations and all formal actions taken by the Board occur during meetings that are open to the public.

Meeting Structure

Most meetings follow a formal agenda, which typically includes:

  1. Executive Session: (Closed to the public) To discuss sensitive matters like legal issues or personnel.

  2. Recognition: Celebrating student and staff achievements.

  3. Action Items: Voting on resolutions and district business.

  4. Public Comment: A window for community members to address the Board.
